More sweetness in the sugar but some burnt caramel edges left behind. Like fizzy peach soft gum sweets! A full malt body underneath reveals itself, along with a woody dryness and more spice. In the mouth, you experience vanilla, citrus, sweet oak, mild caramel, pepper and tea. A grist of 50% barley and 50% wheat, matured in bourbon barrels and finished in oloroso sherry hogsheads, this has a unexpected fullness, with a rich fruity nose. A long, spicy sweet smoke finish revives the lapsang souchong air.

So they have ended up with some incredible whiskies and other spirits. The aroma brings the honey, cinnamon, raisin and a subtle oakiness. A peat nose that verges towards coal smoke, with softening vanilla and some citrus. Aldi have now addressed that problem with their mysterious Glen Marnoch range of whiskies. Some exciting new entrants are rubbing shoulders with distilleries centuries old to make this illustrious spirit, rivalled only by fine wine, for depth. It is a limited run, which makes the £17. The Review Smell: Caramel and a touch of Cinnamon.

Oak spice sits in the background. Thanks for your blogs and tweets. For me the Glenfiddich was the surprise winner! Rich and spicy with layers of sweet oak, a drop of water also helps release the flavours of Sherry Cask Finish. A slightly buttery malt nose, with toffee, touches of green apple and liquorice and an light waft of smoke. The best drinks, taste tested This review was last updated in January 2020.

A splash of saltiness as well, with a rugged coastal feel, moss, plenty of seaweed; it reminds me of walking along the Waternish peninsula on the Isle of Skye. Even without water, the finish is short but satisfying. But above all I love Islay Malts from the subtle bruichladdich to the sublime Lagavulin , or the totally mad Octomore 80ppm peat content Ardbeg 1974 was the best malt that has ever passed my lips. If you require any additional information you can contact Aldi Press Office on 0161 238 9427 or email them at aldi webershandwick. You can name the features in a good single malt and this wee dram has them all. Taste a little peach at the very end. On the palate it feels slightly hotter.

But what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in the quality and intensity of the whisky it produces. It makes a decent everyday single malt for the drinks cabinet. One of those produces a peated malt; clearly not that. Finish…Gives my palate and tongue a wee spicy tingle, this all helps to leave you with a delightful and delicious warmth. As with the Ardbeg, it has a big peat smoke nose, and just as intense, but here it pushes lapsang souchong and brine, while throttling back the bonfire somewhat.

If all else fails, you can, of course, just. The finish gives a little more age and dryness. A rich mouthfeel contributes to long finish, with more of that savoury smoke and a hint of toasted sugar. This is tremendous value for money compared to the £40+ that you could pay for a similar products. It's also likely they are choosing whiskies that appeal to the broadest range of tastes, making it more likely they'll appeal to more of the judges.
